How to Baseline Pupils in TrackAble
Baselining establishes each pupil’s starting point for the academic year. This ensures progress is calculated accurately across all subjects. Follow the steps below to baseline pupils either by subject or through the Baseline overview page.
What Is a Baseline in TrackAble?
A baseline represents the level at which a pupil begins the school year.
When you baseline a pupil:
- TrackAble marks all statements in that level as completed on 30th August (the TrackAble academic year start date).
- All levels below the baseline become hidden by default.
- Progress is calculated from this starting point.
Important: Pupils must not have assessment data in levels below the baseline.
TrackAble will not allow you to baseline until this is cleared.
Method 1: Baseline Within Each Subject
Use this method if you want to baseline pupils one subject at a time.
Steps
- Go to the subject you want to baseline.
- Click Edit on the level that matches the pupil’s baseline.
- A pop-up box will appear.
- Click the Baseline button to confirm.
The selected level will now be recorded as the pupil’s starting point for that subject.
Method 2: Use the View Baseline Tab
This method allows you to manage baselines across all subjects more efficiently.
Steps
At the top of TrackAble, click the View Baseline tab.
All baseline-eligible subjects for that class will be displayed.
- Only subjects allocated to the class will appear.
- Select the appropriate baseline level for each pupil.
Tip:
Before using this method, download the statements into Excel so you can easily review criteria for each subject while you baseline.
Viewing and Managing Levels After Baselining
- Levels below the baseline become hidden automatically.
- To view them, click View Previous Levels.
- Click again to hide them when finished.
Clearing Levels Below the Baseline
If a pupil already has assessment data in lower levels:
- Go to each level below the intended baseline.
- Click Clear Level to remove the data.
- Once all lower-level data is cleared, you can set the baseline.
Do Not Use “Complete Levels” to Set a Baseline
The Complete Levels button marks all statements in a level as complete on a chosen date and counts this as progress for that term.
You should not use this to create a baseline.
A baseline is a starting point, not progress.
